Kumalo Sports Club secured a 2-1 victory over Mass Villa FC in a friendly match played yesterday at Gulu High School Playground, with Nelson Okot Mandela scoring twice to seal the win.
Mandela gave Kumalo Sports Club an early lead in the eighth minute after capitalizing on a defensive error by a Mass Villa FC defender. Kumalo maintained their 1-0 advantage until halftime in a closely contested first half.
In the 57th minute, Kumalo Sports Club thought they had doubled their lead through Bill Clinton, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Moments later, Mass Villa FC found an equalizer when attacking midfielder Obedi scored with a long-range effort that beat Kumalo goalkeeper Ojara Bosco.
The winning goal came in the 65th minute when Mandela completed his brace after receiving a pass from team captain Acire Brian Aduga, restoring Kumalo’s lead and securing a 2-1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Kumalo Sports Club head coach Francis Ochora said the result reflected his team’s progress as several players continue to recover from injuries and regain their fitness following a long break.
Ochora also noted that he included several academy players alongside senior team members to help the youngsters gain confidence and experience.
Mass Villa FC head coach Amone Joshua said his side would learn from the defeat and work towards better performances in upcoming matches.
Joshua also thanked Kumalo Sports Club for making the trip to Gulu High School, saying such friendly matches help strengthen relationships among players, the community, and other stakeholders.
Kumalo Sports Club will continue its pre-season preparations with more friendly matches as the team builds momentum ahead of the upcoming Gulu DFA League and Cup competitions.
